The Louvre Museum
Near to the Jardin des Tuileries, the Louvre is today the Palace of Arts and holds one of the richest museums in the world with a collection which ranges from Egyptian art of 5000 BC to nineteenth-century work with seven departments: Oriental and Islamic Antiquities; Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Roman and Etruscan Antiquities; Painting (European paintings which range from 1400 to 1900, work of Italian Renaissance); Sculpture; Decorative Arts; and Graphic Arts.
The collections are distributed among three big sections which correspond to the 2 wings and to the Cour Carrée: Denon, Richelieu, Sully.

In 1981 President Mitterrand initiated a rehabilitation project called Le Grand Louvre, which the visible part is the Glass Pyramid designed by famous architect Ieoh Ming Pei.
The other major development is underground - a vast space stretching from the Hall Napoleon Pyramid to beyond the Arc du Carrousel, known as the "Espace Carrousel du Louvre. The Gallery of the Carrousel du Louvre associates a museum with a shopping centre of 16000 m2.
