Gustave Moreau Museum
Symbolist Painter
Hidden in the 9th arrondisement, the Musee Moreau was the residence of the Symbolist painter Moreau and was converted into a museum following his death in 1895. It houses his 6000 oil paintings, drawings and watercolours.
Influenced by the English Pre-Raphaelitites, Moreau created jewel-encrusted fantasies of a mythological world or the sombre splendour of Byzantium. The "femme fatale" is a permanent source of inspiration for Moreau depicting her under a variety of characters: virgin, sphinx, vampire, harpy and siren. On the second floor, you’ll see “Moïse saved from the Waters” (1893) and “The Chimeras” (1884)
